The sample examined in section 5.2.2 offers considerable insight into the overall surface morphology resulting from SMM-SOI on the oxide-patterned regions. Extensive optical microscopy investigations were initially conducted in lieu of SEM capability for the earliest experiments. The optical results reveal the relative size, location, and structure of several general surface features. In later stages of the investigation, SEM capability both verified and rectified the original optical microscopy observations.
